Job Description: Political Director
Timeline: Open until filled, interviews begin May 1st, 2022.
Our mission is to empower farm workers and Latinx working families in Oregon by building community, increasing Latinx representation in elections, and policy advocacy on both the national and state levels. PCUN’s Political Director drives and leads PCUN’s the Political Department which includes a team of Political Organizers, and Policy Managers that support engaging in policy development and the legislative strategy, and rules making process in Oregon.
- 4 years + in organizing advocacy campaigns
- Ability to analyze policy and legal language
- Ability to drive a political vision and strategy.
- Excellent writing skills
- Political Savviness and an understanding of the political landscape in Oregon
- Strong relationships amongst Oregon elected officials, and the political community
- Understanding of the Oregon legislative timeline, and process
- Understanding of Oregon legislature, and national legislature
- Excellent people skills
- Ability to manage a team and coalition partners
- Strong understanding of how organizing and policy work are connected
- Personal connection to the Oregon Latinx community
- Bilingual and bicultural
- Public Speaking (English and Spanish)
Legislative + Political
- Builds and oversees legislative/Rulemaking campaign goals, strategies, and budgets to reach political/policy outcomes in specific issue areas. Provide analysis and track progress at each step.
- Builds PCUN political plan, in collaboration with the political team, and ensures its implementation, from lobbying/rulemaking and advocacy work to base building and story banking.
- Stays on top of opportunities and challenges in the political landscape and how they impact PCUN policy campaigns.
- Collaborates and builds relationships with farmworkers, key organizations, decision-makers, and organizers to identify policy problems, solutions to build a comprehensive plan of action with community input at the forefront.
- Manage a portfolio of policy advocacy campaigns in the Oregon legislative session and some national policy portfolios. Delegate roles to political organizers within those campaigns around organizing, testimonies from the base, leadership development, one/ones, house meetings, and lobby days.
- Strategic planning around political relationships and strategy.
- Manages and creates a bill and legislator tracker for PCUN campaigns.
- Plans for hearings, lobby days, and key visibility events during campaign peaks.
- Daily presence in the lobby during legislative sessions with support from department staff and consultants.
- Draft and present testimony on legislative proposals before the Oregon legislature.
- Manage top priority issue coalitions (with support for implementation from a campaign staff)
- Consistent communication with PCUN legislative champions.
- Frequent communication and organizing of key stakeholders.
- Actively participates in rulemaking efforts pertaining to issues impacting farmworkers and implementation of legislation.
- Manage policy and political relationships with city, county, state, and federal elected officials.
- Ensures coordination between Oregon Legislative and Electoral Strategy.
- Lead political & policy check-ins with the policy team to ensure the team is coordinated, and integrated into each other’s work.
- Frequent collaboration with PCUN’s Executive Team to assure cross-departmental collaboration.
- Manage PCUN research team to adequately and accurately inform policy proposals and strategies.
- Maintain organized and up-to-date profiles of political relationships, and testimonies in EveryAction database.
- Manage political organizing: Organize and train PCUN base, and members to participate in grassroots advocacy.
- Represent PCUN at key coalitions and alliances
- Support Executive Director with department fundraising
Salary and Benefits
$65,000-$75,000 per year DOE + Full Benefits: Employer Covered Health Care with family coverage, dental, chiropractor, vision, Paid Medical Family Leave 8 weeks, Retirement Plan with employer match, Professional Development Fund, One month paid sabbatical after 5+ years of employment, home office set up stipend.
Will work some evenings and weekends; currently a hybrid (virtual with some in-person) position due to COVID-19 pandemic; COVID-19 vaccination unless exemption on religious or health basis.
