PCUN Job Opportunity: Community Organizer Wildfire Preparation and Rapid Response Campaign (Temporary Position)

Reporting to: Community Organizers

About PCUN: Our mission is to empower the voices of farmworkers and Latinx working families in Oregon by building community, increasing Latinx representation in elections, and implementing systems change at the state and national levels. We continue to build an agenda that strengthens workers’ rights by creating safer workplaces, advocating for fair wages, and organizing for the economic security of our families.

Position Overview: This position is part of the Healthy WorkPlaces Team in the Organizing Department. Community Organizers for Wildfire Preparedness and Rapid Response are critical to raising awareness this summer about addressing the immediate impacts of climate change.

Our vision is to ensure that our historically underserved communities receive vital information and resources to build resilience and mitigate the impacts of wildfires in Oregon. Our short-term goal is to build a community of Latinx farmworkers and grassroots leaders with a deep understanding of rapid emergency response and preparedness for wildfires, excessive heat, and toxic air quality from smoke in our communities during natural disasters.

Community Organizers must have these key characteristics:

•They are effective communicators and highly organized.
•They are motivated and committed to social justice.
•Have a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred Experience and Qualifications :

•Commitment to PCUN values ​​and social justice
•Ability to manage tasks, be organized, ability to plan ahead.
•Excellent verbal and writing skills in Spanish.
•Indigenous languages are not required, but they’re a plus!
•Ingenuity and self-motivation, with the ability to work independently and in a team.
•Ability to build trust and create strong relationships with the community.
•Knowledge of how to use Google apps: Gmail, docs, sheets, calendar, etc.
•Valid Driver’s License.
•Ability to lift 20 lbs.

Job Responsibilities:

•Support Community Organizers in achieving outreach goals and objectives of the project.
•Cultivate relationships with the PCUN base during outreach at presentations and outreach events.
•Share resources in multiple languages, including Spanish and some indigenous languages.
•Participate in weekly team meetings to report on progress toward goals.
•Identifies potential members for the organization.
•Keep accurate counts and records of your conversations in the community.
•Enters a high volume of data into PCUN’s database (EveryAction).
•Constant contact and follow-up with allies, volunteers, and our Marion and Polk list.
•Attends mandatory orientation for new employees.
•Support in the PCUN Garden maintenance when needed
•Participates in Community events & PCUN events

Location: PCUN’s Headquarters at 300 Young St Woodburn, OR 97071, with some virtual gatherings

COVID-19 Protocols: Vaccination is required unless you have a religious or health exemption.

Duration: Temporary position (July 8, 2024 – September 13, 2024)

Hours: Part-Time, Non-Exempt Position; 20-25 hours per week for the duration of the general campaign cycle (July – September 2024). Must be able to work evenings and weekends.

Compensation: $21/hr and monthly phone stipend.
